HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Winona State soccer team started off its 2016 campaign on the road in Houghton, Michigan against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Warriors would get a goals from sophomore
Darian Molter and freshman
Courtney Wiencek in the 2-0 victory.
The first period included shots from five different Warriors.
Kenzie Rose, Meg Reibau, Wiencek and Molter all had shots along with a shot on goal from
Taylor Richards.
The first 45 minutes proved to be a physical one as the teams racked up 14 fouls, eight against the Warriors and six against the Huskies.
After a foul and an offside penalty against the Huskies, sophomore
Darian Molter recorded the first goal of the season for the Warriors, in the 60
th minute. The goal is the seventh of Molter's career.
Wiencek and Molter would substitute in and out for one another in the second half. Late in the match Wiencek subbed back in, this time coming on for
Mikaella Sabinash in the 81
st minute. Six minutes later she would get an assist from Molter to score the first goal of her career in the 87
th minute.
Keeper
Rachel Oleson starts out the season with a shutout and four saves on the night.
The Warriors had seven shots on goal while the Huskies were only able to put up seven total shots. Meg Reibau was aggressive and had two on goal on the night.
Winona State (1-0) will travel to Marquette, Michigan to face Northern Michigan (1-1) at 12p.m. (CST) on Sunday.
