MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Winona State women's soccer team concluded its trip to Michigan with an overtime battle with Northern Michigan (1-2). The Warriors (2-0) earned the 3-2 victory with an overtime goal from senior
Meg Riebau. Freshman
Alyssa Reynolds and senior
Kenzie Rose recorded goals in the second half of regulation.
The Warriors produced 24 shots, with 15 of those on goal in the victory, while the Wildcats had eight shots fall on net.
The first strike of the game would come from Allyssa Milam, on a free kick with less than a minute before the end of the first half, giving NMU a 1-0 lead.
Hayley Bach,
Abby Bohanski,
Courtney Wiencek,
Alyssa Reynolds, and
Chase Rehm all had shots on goal in the first half along with three more from Riebau.
Riebau also added three corner kick opportunities in the first half. She would end the match with seven shots, four of them on goal, including the match-winner in overtime.
The Warriors struck back in the 46
th minute when Reynolds put home a rebound off a shot from Bohanski.
Two corner kicks from Riebau and one from Bohanski would lead to the go-ahead goal by senior
Kenzie Rose in the 83
rd minute of action. The assist was credited to Bohanski on the Rose goal.
Five minutes later and after two shots on goal from Wiencek, Wildcat Carmen Villarruel would come back and get a shot past Warrior goalkeeper
Rachel Oleson. The Wildcat goal would even the score at two. The 88
th minute goal not only tied the match but was a big reason why it moved to an overtime session.
In overtime Wiencek would have another shot saved by Wildcat goalkeeper Caroline Glantz. In the fourth minute Riebau was able to sneak a rebound shot off a block into the left corner, producing the match winner.
Rachel Oleson yielded two goals but had six saves on the afternoon. Northern Michigan keeper, Glantz, did her best to keep NMU in the match, stopping 12 shots.
The Warriors will travel to face Upper Iowa for their first conference matchup on Friday, September 9
th with a 3 p.m. start.
