Winona, Minn. – Winona State (7-5-1, 6-3-1 NSIC) continued to prove that it belongs in the conference tournament picture on Saturday afternoon with a scrappy last-second 2-1 win over U-Mary (7-3-2, 5-3-2 NSIC).
Under cloudy skies, the first half of the game got off to a slow start with neither team managing to mount much of a consistent offensive attack.
The Marauders had two chances early that both went high over the net. The Warriors' best chance to score in the first half came when Darian Molter hit the crossbar in front of a busy U-Mary net. Physicality was never a question when these two teams took the field. Eight fouls and two yellow cards were assessed in the first 45 minutes.
The half ended with only seven total shots for both teams.
The two teams picked up right where they left off at the start of the second half. Now, in the pouring rain, the scoreless game continued.
Abby Bohanski almost put the Warriors on the board with a header in the first minute of the half, but U-Mary goalkeeper Hannah Smith was able to get her hands on it for the save. Minutes later, in a scrum in front of the net, Taylor Johnson gets her first goal of the year assisted by Bohanski to put Winona State up 1-0.
However, the Winona State lead was short-lived. MacKenzie Challoner was given a yellow card a minute later for tripping Marauders' forward Jade Smith. Smith was then awarded a penalty kick and put it past Rachel Oleson to tie the game at one.
As the seconds ticked away in the final minutes of the match, both teams were eager to end the game before getting to overtime, trading scoring chances and doing whatever they could to net the decisive goal.
With under a minute to go, U-Mary committed a foul on their own end giving the Warriors a chance to score before time expired. And, Bohanski did just that.
The junior took a pass from Justice Menge and was able to chip her shot over the shoulder of Smith for the game-winning score.
Bohanski has been red-hot as of late, and added to her season total in goals (6) and assists (5) in the Warrior triumph.
Oleson finished the day with five saves and improves to 7-5-1 on the season.
Winona State is back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Minot State at 1:00 pm. form Maxwell Field.
