WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State Warriors improved to 6-5-1 (5-3-1 NSIC) on Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Southwest Minnesota State at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Southwest threatened early in the match when Kelli Wentz was able to get a shot through the Warrior defenders, but
Rachel Oleson made a diving save to deny the visiting team. Roughly 10 minutes later, Winona State took advantage of a scoring opportunity
Justice Menge took a shot from the left side which was stopped by Mustang goalkeeper Jenna Meyer, but remained loose in front of the net. That shot was deflected to Darien Molter who passed it to
Abby Bohanski for the game's first goal.
Later in the first half, Bohanski fed freshman
Georgette Topalis who was streaking past the Southwest defenders for the second goal of the game.
In the second half,
Alyssa Reynolds got her name on the scoresheet as she beat Meyer from close range early in the second half to put the Warriors up 3-0. Southwest came close to shortening the gap when Amanda Hartmann hit the crossbar just out of the reach of Oleson. Before the final whistle, Hartmann got the Mustangs on the board finding the ball in the scrum off of a corner kick.
Topalis' first career goal proved to be the deciding factor for the Warriors in today's game. Bohanski netted her team-leading fifth of the season while Reynolds gets her fourth of the year.
Rachel Oleson recorded her sixth win of the year and now improves to 6-5-1 on the year. She faced 10 shots and was able to get her hands on eight of them.
Winona State gets to stay home next weekend as U-Mary comes to town. First touch against the Marauders is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday October 14
