Balanced scoring lifts Winona State over Minnesota State

WINONA, MINN - Four of Winona State's starting five reached double figures in scoring on Friday night in an 80-52 rout of Minnesota State-Mankato in McCown Gymnasium.

Allie Pickrain (15), Hannah McGlone (14), Kayla Schaefer (14) and Rachel Novotny (12) led the way in the Warriors' first home conference matchup of the season. WSU improves to 7-1 (3-1 NSIC) with the win.

Minnesota State's defense pressured the Warriors effectively in the first half, forcing WSU into an uncharacteristic 10 turnovers. Despite those miscues, Winona still maintained a lead at the end of the first quarter and into halftime.

Midway through the second quarter, Pickrain and Schaefer connect on back-to-back three-pointers to give the Warriors the big momentum shift they needed to create a sizeable double-digit lead. Winona State maintained that lead going into the break up 13 points, 39-26.

To open the second half, the Warriors went on a 20-to-4 run highlighted by 14 points scored by the two Winona State starting forwards. Together, McGlone and Novotny combined for 18 of the team's second-half points.

Forcing the ball down low seemed to be an emphasis for the Warriors against the Mavericks as the home team finished the night with 38 points in the paint, including 26 in the second half.

As a team, the Warriors shot 59% from the field and were 8-14 from three-point range.

McGlone tallied her third straight double-double, concluding the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Emily Kieck was the Warriors' top performer off the bench tonight with nine points.

Winona State continues its three-game homestand in McCown Gymnasium tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Concordia-St. Paul.
