ABERDEEN, S.D. – Head Coach
Kyle Poock picked up his 400
th career victory on Saturday when the Warriors split a double header with Northern State.
Mitchell Stalsberg pitched a one-hit shutout as the Winona State (15-29, 15-19 NSIC) won 9-0. The Wolves (20-24, 13-19 NSIC) responded in game two, beating the Warriors 12-3.
GAME ONE
Poock Picks Up Win 400
Mitchell Stalsberg allowed just one hit and the Warriors scored early and often in the first of four games against Northern State. In the top of the first
Sam Kohnle,
Mitchell Heid and
Kipp Youngquist all picked up RBI's, putting WSU up 3-0.
Michael Hommes scored on a wild put and the Warriors led 4-0 after two.
Derek Martin and
Joe Kubera hit back-to-back doubles in the top of inning three, giving the Warriors a six run lead. Kubera was back at in the top of the fifth, driving in
Nathan Krause with a sac fly to right field.
Youngquist drove in both
Chad Herbst and
Andrew Pliner in the sixth inning to help finish off the Wolves 9-0. Stalsberg struck out eight in his seven innings of shutout work.
GAME TWO
Wolves Bats Respond in Game Two
After three scoreless innings Northern State scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Winona State responded in the top of the fifth when Kubera doubled to left driving in
Derek Martin and
Chad Herbst. The Wolves would counter with two runs of their own, retaking a six-run lead.
Herbst got a run back in the sixth, driving in Jesus Cazares with a single up the middle. Northern State would respond by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 11-3 lead. The final run of the game scored in the bottom of the eighth.
The same two teams will meet up again tomorrow at noon.
