MANKATO, Minn. – No. 11 Winona State University won its fifth straight match on Thursday night with a straight set victory at Minnesota State-Mankato. WSU swept the Maverick by scores of 25-14, 25-22, 26-24.
The Warriors improved to 7-2 overall this season and 1-0 in NSIC play after their first conference match.
Mankato took an initial 2-0 lead in the opening set before Winona rattled off five straight points amid a 12-2 run to take a commanding 12-4 lead in the game. The Warriors did not surrender more than two straight Maverick points for the remainder of the set en route to their convincing win.
Winona owned a .323 attacking percentage in the first set while committing just three hitting errors.
A back-and-forth second set ensued with Winona's biggest lead coming on a kill from Lauren Kudronowicz midway through the game at 16-12. The Mavericks proceeded to cut their deficit to 17-16 until another Warrior run was capped by the senior, Kudronowicz, forcing a Mankato timeout with Winona leading 20-16.
The Mavericks again cut the Warrior lead to just two points at 24-22 before Maria Wrage floored the final kill of the second set.
Mankato looked to extend the match in the third set with a late four-point rally, and took a 22-21 lead in the game to force a Winona timeout. The Warriors responded with a 5-2 run, culminating with a block by Kudronowicz and Maria Fruechte to secure the sweep.
Danielle Rampart led Winona with 11 kills followed by 10 from Wrage. Kudronowicz matched her season high by flooring nine kills for the third straight match.
Jordan Runge recorded five of the Warriors' season-best nine service aces in the win.
The Warriors will play their first home match of the season against No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday. First serve between the two nationally-ranked teams is scheduled for 4 p.m. in McCown Gymnasium.
