Soccer Tops UMD Under The Lights

Winona, Minn. – A second-half goal helped the Winona State Warriors edge out Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, in a nail biter on Friday night from Maxwell Field.

Winona State opened the scoring Friday night in the 10th minute on a header by Courtney Wiencek. The goal was scored off of a pass from Maggie Ruelle who was able to get possession on the corner kick. The rest of the half remained physical, but neither team was able to score. Shots on goal in the first were nine to two in favor of the Bulldogs.

In the second, Minnesota Duluth tied the game at one apiece on a goal by midfielder Destiny Schmitz. In the 68th minute, Melissa Greco was able to put the Warriors back in front, banging in a rebound following another corner kick by Abby Bohanski.

For Winona State, Wiencek scored her third goal of the season while Greco tallied her first career goal as a Warrior. Darian Molter lead the team with five total shots Friday while both her and Wiencek had two on goal.

As a team, the Warriors were able to get six shots on net in the contest while UMD tallied seven. Each team had six fouls and one yellow card was given to each side.

Rachel Oleson picked up her fourth win of the season to improving her record to 4-4-1. She faced seven shots on goal and was able to put a mitt on all but one that hit the crossbar.

Winona State (4-4-1, 3-2-1 NSIC) looks to complete the weekend sweep as they host St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Maxwell Field.
