WINONA, Minn. – The No. 7-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs overpowered Winona State University on Friday night, sweeping the Warriors and sending WSU to its second three-match losing streak of the season.
Duluth improves to 18-4 (11-2 NSIC) with the straight set victory while sending Winona State to a 9-12 (6-7 NSIC) record. Two of the Warriors' three losing during their current skid have come against top-10 teams in the country.
The Bulldogs made quick of the Warriors with set scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-16.
The Bulldog defense came into the match ranked second in the NSIC in opponent hitting percentage (.147) and held to form against the Warriors as the visiting team hit just a .069 clip.
Winona State was limited six kills in the first game as Duluth went on to dig up 59 balls in the three-set match. The Warrior offense was stifled once again in set two, being held to just five kills while committing eight attacking errors.
With their backs against the wall, the Warriors found their offensive rhythm in set three, flooring 12 kills to go along with a .333 hitting percentage. Winona State's valiant effort was overmatched yet again though by the Bulldogs who hit .571 in the game and floored 17 kills while committing just one error.
Duluth added four service aces on the night and held WSU without an ace for just the second time all season.
Taylor Goar was the Warriors' leading attacker with five kills. Paige Christopher added four. Madison Rizner recorded three kills and led the team with five blocks in the setback.
Winona State returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a big match in the conference standings against St. Cloud State. The Warriors will look to avoid their first four-match losing streak since 2013 with a 2 p.m. match against the Huskies.
