Royer's game-winner sinks Augustana in overtime

WINONA, Minn. – Addie Royer sent Warrior fans home happy as she found the back of the net just over two minutes into the first overtime period, lifting Winona State over Augustana, 2-1.

Under cloudy skies and a slight drizzle, the Warriors and Vikings gave the fans what they came for as the two teams battled to the finish Friday afternoon.

Winona State (18) edged Augustana (14) in the shot category while the two teams had six fouls apiece.

Augustana came into the day, second in the conference and immediately showed why as the Vikings opened the scoring just under nine minutes into the match.

The Vikings maintained pressure on the Warrior defense the rest of the half, limiting Winona State's chances to score. Courtney Wiencek had her share of opportunities in the first half, the closest coming in the 24th minute when she hit the crossbar.

Augie went into the locker room at half leading, 1-0, but that didn't last long. Early on the second half, the Vikings' Rebecca Gasper was given a red card and ejected from the game. Melissa Greco was awarded the free kick in the box and capitalized, tying the match at one apiece.

The Warriors played with a one-player advantage from then on due to the ejection.

WSU battled its way through the second half rattling off nine shots, hoping to break the tie.

In the end, the match needed just a little extra time to decide the victor. That's where Royer stepped in. The Warriors gained the Augustana end and Abby Bohanski placed a beautiful cross right to the junior, Royer, as she proceeded to score.

Weincek ended the day with five total shots while Georgette Topalis had three of her own.

Goalkeeper Jourdan Valkner earned the win after recording six saves.

Winona State improved to 3-5-1 ( 3-4-1 NSIC) with the win, while Augustana falls to 7-3-1 (6-2-0 NSIC).

The Warriors are back in action on Sunday as they host Wayne State College to close out Homecoming Weekend at 1 p.m.
