WINONA, Minn. – It was a day of firsts for the Winona State University Warriors in a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon over Wayne State College at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Freshman Riley Harmon netted her first collegiate goal in the first half which stood as the game-winner, and fellow rookie Yanel Ortiz posted a shutout while making her first career start in goal.
Winona State continues its series dominance over Wayne State (26-0-1 all-time) while limiting the Wildcats to just two shots on goal over the 90-minute contest.
The Wildcats tested Ortiz early in the match firing four shots her direction within the first 15 minutes of action, however, only one attempt landed on target in the opening half. appearance.
Meanwhile, the always active Warrior offense broke the scoring seal just before halftime when Kara Schramel found Harmon right in front of the net. The freshman was able to place the ball beautifully over the goalkeeper's right shoulder to give Winona State a 1-0 edge into the break.
WSU came out in the second and added an insurance goal for good measure. Courtney Wiencek corralled a loose ball in front of the net following a corner kick and padded the Warrior lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute.
Wayne State tested Ortiz one final time in the second half and she was able to come up with her second of two saves on the day.
Mariah Northrop left the match due to injury in the 72nd minute and was unable to return.
Senior Abby Bohanski (3) led the Warriors in shots and landed two on target.
Winona State improves to 4-5-1 (4-4-1 NSIC) on the year with the victory and Wayne State falls to 3-7-1 (3-5-1 NSIC).
The Warriors continue their current four-game homestand next weekend against Minnesota Duluth next Friday night at 7 p.m. and St. Cloud State next Sunday at 1 p.m.
