FAYETTE, Iowa – It was a night to forget at Upper Iowa University on Tuesday as Winona State University opened a three-match road swing this week with a disappointing straight set loss to the Peacocks. The Warriors' 21 attacking errors were their most in a three set match since the opening weekend of the season.
Winona State was limited to a .094 hitting percentage, falling below the .100 mark for just the fourth time this year, and second time against Upper Iowa.
The loss drops Winona State to 9-11 (6-6 NSIC) while Upper Iowa improves to 13-7 (6-6 NSIC) after sweeping the season series. WSU now sits in a three-way tie for eighth in the conference with Minnesota State Mankato and Upper Iowa; each who hold tie-breakers over the Warriors.
After winning six of its last eight matches and pushing No. 2 Northern State to five sets on Saturday, Winona State came out flat against Upper Iowa, committing 11 attacking errors while flooring just eight kills in a 25-12 loss.
The Warriors pushed the Peacocks in set two before falling, 25-23, and were unable to muster a comeback in a 25-17 third set loss as the home team completed the sweep.
WSU was fighting an uphill battle all night. After losing big in set one, the Warriors found themselves in a 12-5 hole in set two. Midway through the second set, Winona State put together a 6-2 run and made it a one-point game at 22-21. The Peacocks refused to relinquish the lead though, as the teams traded points to the finish line with Upper Iowa holding on for a two-point win.
The Peacocks proceeded to lead wire-to-wire in the final game as Upper Iowa never trailed WSU at any point of the match.
Hayley Dessner and Megan Flom had six kills apiece for Winona State. Bre Maloney (12), Becca Pagel (11) and Taylor Goar (10) each recorded double digit digs.
The Warriors' action-packed week continues on Friday with a matchup at No. 7 Minnesota Duluth. Winona State concludes the weekend with a Saturday tilt at St. Cloud State.
