WINONA, Minn. – Winona State University and Minnesota Crookston couldn't decide a winner on Friday evening at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium as the two NSIC teams finished in a 1-1 double overtime draw.
Both goals came in the second period with the Golden Eagles finding the back of the net in the waning minutes of regulation. The Warriors dominated the shot column all day and in the two overtime periods, but neither team could net the golden goal.
Winona State controlled the ball for the majority of the first half playing keep away from Minnesota Crookston. WSU unleashed just three shots in the first half, but was unable to capitalize on the chances. Georgette Topalis had the best opportunity with a point blank chance, but was stuffed by the UMC goalkeeper.
The Warrior defense was spot on in the first half, not allowing the Golden Eagles a single opportunity at a shot.
Coming out of the half, both teams showed a little urgency on the offensive side of the ball firing off 11 combined shots. Chase Rehm had an opportunity early in the frame, but couldn't quite get enough on the header attempt.
In the middle of the second, Bridget Doran broke the scoring seal on a free kick opportunity that made a b-line to the top left corner of the net to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
As the final minutes ticked off the clock, momentum began to shift towards the Golden Eagles. With just under three minutes remaining, UMC penetrated the Warrior defense and beat goalkeeper Jourdan Valkner on a rebound shot to her left side to tie the match at one-apiece before time expired.
The Warriors and Golden Eagles played two extra periods, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Abby Bohanski attempted to send Winona State home with a win tallying three shots in the final frame, but was unable to capitalize as the match ended, 1-1.
Crookston's lone shot on goal over 110 minutes of action was the late equalizer.
Bohanski led the Warriors with four total shots while Addie Royer collected three of her own.
With the tie, Winona State now sits at 1-3-1 (1-2-1 NSIC) on the season while Minnesota Crookston remains winless at 0-6-1 (0-3-1 NSIC)
Still seeking their first home victory of the young season, the Warriors host No. 12 Bemidji State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
