ABERDEEN, S.D. – Winona State University overcame a 1-0 first half deficit and led 2-1 in the second half, only to see Northern State University score two unanswered goals and hold on for a 3-2 victory.
Georgette Topalis and Alyssa Reynolds netted goals to account for the Warriors' highest scoring output since the first game of the year, but it wasn't enough to secure Winona State's first win since that season-opening victory.
WSU falls to 1-5-1 (1-4-1 NSIC) with the loss while NSU improves to 5-3-1 (3-2-1 NSIC).
After being shutout for the third straight period to open play against the Wolves on Friday, the Warriors finally broke out of their recent offensive slump. Trailing by 1-0 at halftime, Topalis netted the equalizer less than 10 minutes after the break. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Addie Royer in the top of the box.
Winona State continued to apply offensive pressure and found success again when Reynolds fired a deep shot from 24 yards out in the 67th minute to give the Warriors a 2-1 edge. The WSU lead was short-live however, as the Wolves evened the score at two goals apiece just two minutes later.
Northern State's Shianne Rosseli proceeded to beat Winona State keeper Jourdan Valkner for the second time in the second half with the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute. The Warriors, who owned a 25-11 advantage in shots, could only get off one more shot over the final seven minutes of play before the final whistle blew.
The Warriors put 12 shots on goal compared to just five by Northern State, but it wasn't enough in the setback. Valkner gloved two saves in the losing effort for Winona State.
Abby Bohanski and Courtney Wiencek led the way with four shots apiece and put two on target.
The Warriors will look to get back into the win column on Sunday with the conclusion of their road trip at MSU Moorhead with a 1 p.m. contest.
