Warrior offense erupts in shutout over MSU-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Winona State University scored a season-high four goals Sunday afternoon as the Warriors concluded their weekend road trip with a shutout at MSU-Moorhead. Melissa Greco netted her second goal of the year in the first half as WSU went on to add three more second half goals in the 4-0 victory.

Winona State made the most of a season-high 19 shots on goal in the weekend finale. Despite their recent offensive slump, the Warriors are among the league-leaders in shots on goal this year and the offensive pressure finally paid dividends on Sunday. The trio of Georgette Topalis, Mariah Northrop and Abby Bohanski had four shots apiece with the latter two each finding the back of the net.

The Warriors applied the pressure early, taking a dozen shots in the first half. On the other end of the field, Winona State's defense was on lockdown only allowing the Dragons to get uncorked five total shots.

WSU keeper Jourdan Valkner recorded four saves in the opening half while the Warrior offense put eight shots on goal with Greco's penalty kick in the 36th minute of the first half accounting for the lone score.

In the second half, Winona State added three more goals to the score sheet as three Warriors tallied their first goals of the 2018 campaign. After an early season scoring drought, Bohanski found the back of the net for the first time in her senior season in the 53rd minute. Northrop was next with her first goal in a Warrior uniform to pad the lead to 3-0 at the 80-minute mark. Finally, sophomore Camryn Cadiz added another just for good measure before the final buzzer sounded.

The Warriors chased Dragon goalkeeper Kayleigh Sedlacek just before Winona State added their final two goals to the scoreboard.

Valkner played lights out today as the senior goalie halted all seven of MSU-Moorhead's shots that landed on target.

Winona State improves to 2-5-1 (2-4-1 NSIC) with its first victory since opening day and MSU-Moorhead falls to 2-7-0 (2-5-0 NSIC).

The Warriors return home next Friday for homecoming weekend, facing off against Augustana on Friday afternoon and Wayne State on Sunday.
