WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University gymnastics team open the home portion of its schedule Tuesday night in McCown Gymnasium with its first head-to-head conference meet of the season with Gustavus Adolphus College. In a close finish, the Gusties narrowly defeated the Warriors by a score of 180.275-178.725.
Winona State freshman Kaitlyn West continued to shine as the rookie finished in a first place tie on the vault (9.3) and floor exercise (9.4). Those marks were just off her season highs set last week. Junior Kennedy Utz finished third for the Warriors on vault with a score of 9.225. Megan Tran and Shelsea Zehr tied for third place on floor with matching scores of 9.3.
Tran continued her strong night by recording the Warriors' highest score on balance beam with an 8.95 to place third. Cora Geiger (8.875), Kelly Johnston (8.825) and Natalie Koehler (8.6) placed fifth through seventh, respectively.
Sunny Hasebe led WSU on the uneven parallel bars with a third-place finish at a score of 9.225. Zehr was close behind in fourth place with an even 9.0. Hailey Bryant (8.85) and Anna Hiller (8.45) took fifth and sixth place.
The Warriors will see Gustavus once again this weekend in a triangular meet that also includes host UW-Whitewater on Saturday, January 26 at 4 p.m.
