SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Winona State University had its two-game winning streak ended Friday afternoon in a 3-0 shutout by Augustana University. The loss halts a string of back-to-back shutouts by the Warriors and stands as the third time the Warriors have been blanked this year.
WSU falls to 4-6 (3-4) with the setback while Augustana improves to 8-1-1 (4-1-0 NSIC) with its fifth straight win.
The Warriors were aggressive early as freshman Jaida Wiege, junior Georgette Topalis, junior Camryn Cadiz and senior Mariah Northrop all put shots on goal within the first seven minutes of the game. Unfortunately, none of those found the back of the net, and the home team took the offensive from there, forcing the Warriors to play tight defense the remainder of the half. Goals by the Vikings in the 29th and 33rd minutes gave them a 2-0 lead at the break.
Winona State possessed the ball better in the second half and was able to put up more shots (10) than the Vikings (7), but again came without dividends. The Vikings went on to add one more goal before the final buzzer to account for the 3-0 victory.
Northrop led the Warriors in shots (4) with Wiege and senior Courtney Wiencek close behind (3). Goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz continued her strong play with six saves on the day.
The Vikings (17) outshot the Warriors (14) while the Warriors (10) edged out the Vikings on shots on goal (9). Augustana also held an 8-3 lead on corner kicks as well as a 5-1 lead on fouls.
The Warriors conclude their current road trip on Sunday at Wayne State College for a 1 p.m. game.
