Warriors blank Wolves for first home victory

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State University Warrior defense limited Northern State University to just six shots on Friday night at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium and Yanel Ortiz halted the lone shot on target for her first shutout of the season as the home team prevailed, 2-0.

Missy Greco and Kara Schramel netted first half goals which was plenty for the Warrior to tally their first home win of the year.

Winona State improves to 3-5 (2-3 NSIC) while Northern State falls to 3-4 (1-3 NSIC) after being shut out for the fifth time this season.

The first half of play saw a majority of the action as WSU owned a commanding 10-2 lead in total shots over the first 45 minutes. The Warriors broke the scoreless stalemate with a headed by Greco off a crossing pass by senior Courtney Wiencek in the 30th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Schramel found the ball at her feet in front of the goal after a wild corner kick and calmly placed it in the back of the net to double up the score at 2-0.

The second half of play was less eventful as both sides combined for just nine total shots. Ortiz grabbed her lone save the game on a shot in the 70th minute. The sophomore keeper registered her fourth career shutout.

Greco, attempting to find the net again, had a close miss from 30 yards out late in the second half, but the attempt sailed wide.

The Warriors held a 15-6 edge in total shots as well as posting a 6-1 advantage on shots on goal. Greco led the way for the Warriors in shots (5) with freshman Jaida Wiege close behind (4).

The Warriors return to their home turf on Sunday as they put their 23-game winning streak against MSU-Moorhead on the line at 1 p.m. The Dragons are coming off a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Upper Iowa and will be looking to get back into the win column.
