Warriors post second straight shutout to conclude weekend sweep

WINONA, Minn. – For the second time in three days, the Winona State University defense was dominant, and the Warrior offense did its job for a 2-0 win on Sunday over MSU Moorhead at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. WSU also blanked Northern State at home on Friday in a 2-0 victory.

Sunday's triumph over the Dragons marked the 24th consecutive Warrior win in the series dating back to 1997.

Winona State improves to 4-5 (3-5 NSIC) with back-to-back wins while MSU-Moorhead falls to 3-3-3 (1-3-2 NSIC).

The Warrior offense wasted little time finding the back of the net and giving goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz a 1-0 lead. Senior Kendyl Keay tallied her first goal of the season just 63 seconds after kickoff, taking advantage of a pinpoint pass by fellow senior Courtney Wiencek.

Winona State applied plenty of pressure of the first 20 minutes, but the remainder of the period was played near midfield with both teams combining for just six total shot attempts in the first half of action.

The 1-0 stalemate carried into the second half until action picked back up in the final 15 minutes of play. Desperate for a goal, the Dragons pushed almost everyone up and were constantly threatening late. Moorhead managed to get four corner kicks during the latter half of the second period, but only managed one shot on goal, which was easily saved by Ortiz.

The Warriors tacked on an insurance goal when freshman Ellie Wardell fed the ball to junior Georgette Topalis at the top of the 18-yard line, who lofted the ball over the keeper to pad the home team's lead to 2-0.

Winona State owned a 14-6 edge in total shots (4-1 SOG) in the win. Freshman Jaida Wiege led the way in shots (3) while multiple players had shots on goal. Topalis' goal was her team-leading fourth of the season. Wiencek tallied her third assist of the year while Wardell's assist was the first of her collegiate career.

The Warriors hit the road next weekend as they head to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to face Augustana on Friday, October 11 at 4 p.m. and conclude their trip at Wayne State on Sunday, October 13.
