SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Winona State University could not overcome a two-game deficit in the second half of Sunday's tilt at the University of Sioux Falls and ultimately suffered a 2-1 loss in the Warriors' final road game of the regular season.
Winona State falls to 7-10 (6-8 NSIC) with its second straight loss while Sioux Falls improves to 4-12-1 (4-9-1 NSIC). The Warriors now need a win in their regular season finale on Friday coupled with a Wayne State loss to qualify for the conference tournament.
The Warriors came out of the gate swinging on Sunday afternoon, landing three shots on target in the first five minutes of action against the Cougars. Winona State was stymied by the Sioux Falls keeper on each of those attempts as Holli Knudsen went on to record 11 saves in the Cougar win.
The home team only landed on shot on target in the first half and made the most of it as the attempt landed in the back of the net in the 40th minute to give Sioux Falls a 1-0 edge heading into halftime.
Winona State continued to knock on the door in the second half as Georgette Topalis and Jaida Wiege both uncorked good scoring chances that were denied by Knudsen in goal. The Cougars went on to take a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute that proved to be insurmountable for the Warriors.
Just one minute later, senior Mariah Northrop gave Winona State a glimpse of hope when she took advantage of a loose ball off a free kick and sent it past Knudsen for a goal as the Warrior deficit was suddenly cut in half. In the 84th minute, Missy Greco registered Winona State's final scoring attempt but her shot sailed wide at the score held at the final whistle, 2-1.
Wiege (7) led WSU in shots while Northrop recorded four shots on goal. Freshman Ellie Wardell put all three of her shot attempts on frame in the loss. Sophomore keeper Yanel Ortiz tallied for saves.
Winona State led Sioux Falls in shots (21-10) while doubling them up in shots on goal (12-6). The Warriors managed seven corner kicks compared to just one for the Cougars, and the Cougars would lead the way in fouls with 10 while the Warriors had just two.
The Warriors return home for Friday's must-win game against Upper Iowa University and also celebrate Senior Night. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
