Winona State falls to Wayne State in battle of the Warriors

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Winona State University concluded play at the RussMatt Collegiate Invitational Monday night with a 6-3 loss to Wayne State University. The Warriors of Winona State led 2-0 early but could not hold off the Wayne State Warriors who are off to a 10-3 start this season.

Winona State University falls to 6-4 with the loss.

Zac Stange got the Winona State offense out to a fast start with a leadoff walk in the top of the first frame and Tanner Williams followed with a run-scoring triple for a 1-0 lead. Sam Kohnle was next with an RBI-single to give Winona State a 2-0 edge. Williams has driven in five runs on the Florida road trip and Kohnle extended his hitting streak to six straight games.

The offensive highlights ceased from there as Winona State was held scoreless until the final inning when Derek Martin cut Wayne State's lead in half with a sac fly. Martin leads the team with 11 RBI on the young season.

Wayne State knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the first and proceeded to score six unanswered runs over the first three innings of the ballgame.

Kyle Gendron (1-1) suffered the loss in his first career start on the mound for Winona State. The freshman right-hander scattered nine hits and allowed six runs over 7.0 IP. Jacob Watzka relieved Gendron in the eighth frame and tossed his third consecutive scoreless inning.  

Austin Savary went 2-for-3 at the plate for Winona State in his fifth multi-hit effort of the season.

Winona State will conclude its road trip in the Sunshine State on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. ET first pitch at Florida Tech.
