KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Winona State University saved its best for last on Saturday in the final round of the 2019 NSIC Men's Golf Championship at Shoal Creek Golf Club. The Warriors' third round score of 277 was their best of the weekend by 16 strokes and was seven shots ahead of the next lowest score on Saturday. At the end of the three-day tournament, Winona State claimed its 14th NSIC Championship with a dominant 26-stroke victory over Concordia-St. Paul.
With the win, Winona State earns the NSIC's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II Super Regional.
WSU's Ben Jasper took home individual medalist honors as the tournament champion and was one of four Warriors to earn NSIC All-Tournament honors. The senior sat in second place after day one with a round of 72 (+1) and took over the lead in round two Friday with a 73 (+2). Jasper then shot a 69 (-2) in Saturday's finale to help lead the Warriors' championship finish.
Fellow senior Michael Schmitz led all players on Saturday with his best round of the weekend, carding a 66 (-5), to tie for second place overall in the outing. Schmitz, who qualified as an individual for the NCAA DII Super Regional last season, will be joined by his teammates in this year's postseason.
Brady Madsen finished in fourth place with rounds of 72, 77 (+6) and 70 (-1) just ahead of teammate Tyler Beeck who carded scores of 74 (+3), 73 and 73 to tie for fifth place overall. Both Warriors, along with Schmitz, joined Jasper as All-Tournament honorees. Jasper led all players with 13 birdies over the three-round outing while Beeck led the field with 38 pars.
Bentley Glass, who was a 2018 NSIC All-Tournament recipient, also had a strong finish on Saturday with his best effort of the event Saturday by carding a 72.
The 2019 NCAA DII Super Regional is set for May 9-11 in Hot Springs, Arkansas at Hot Springs Country Club, Arlington Course. The NCAA Championship would follow on May 21-25 at The Resort at Glade Springs, Cob Course in Daniels, West Virginia.
