KENOSHA, Wis. – The Winona State University women's soccer team battle until the final whistle on Tuesday afternoon, but couldn't not overcome a pair of second half goals by UW-Parkside as the Warriors dropped their first of three games this week by a score of 2-1.
Winona State concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-2 record.
The first half against Parkside was a defensive battle as both goalkeepers fended away a combined 17 total shots to keep the game scoreless at half. Sophomore goalie Yanel Ortiz would finish the game with a season-high five saves in the setback.
The Rangers finally broke the scoreless drought with a goal in the 69th minute to put the Warriors on their heels. The home team didn't let up, however, as Parkside once again found the back of the net in the 84th minute for a 2-0 advantage.
The Warriors continued to battle and pulled to within one on freshman Ellie Wardell's first collegiate goal. Her unassisted score in the 87th gave Winona State a fighting chance, but the Warriors ultimately came up short. WSU uncorked a pair of shots that missed the mark over the final three minutes of play.
Winona State held an 18-13 edge on shots with UW-Parkside owning a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Mariah Northrop led the way with four total shots while Courtney Wiencek landed two on target.
Both sophomore Ella Roberts and senior Taylor Johnson would pick up their first yellow cards of the year in the contest.
The Warriors jump right in the thick of NSIC competition by hosting the defending conference tournament champs, and No. 3-nationally ranked Minnesota State Mankato on Friday at 6 p.m. Winona State wraps up its weekend doubleheader against Concordia, St. Paul on Sunday at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
