WINONA, Minn. – The defending NSIC Tournament champs, and No. 3-ranked Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks, spoiled Winona State University's home opener on Friday night at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium with a 3-0 victory.
The Mavericks uncorked 33 total shots, peppering sophomore goalie Yunel Ortiz with 19 on target as the Warrior keeper tallied 16 saves in the setback. Ortiz's 16 saves are a new single-game record as Winona State celebrates its 25th season of women's soccer in 2019.
Mankato's relentless pressure began right after kickoff as the Mavericks netted their first of three goals just four minutes in. The Mavericks proceeded to take a 2-0 advantage into the break with another score in the 27th minute.
The Warrior defense effectively slowed the Mavericks in the second half of play before Mankato tacked on its final goal in the 83rd minute. Winona State allowed 20 Mankato shots in the first half compared to 13 over the final 45 minutes.
Winona State was limited to just eight shots on the night, but managed to put five of those on target, however, Maverick keeper Alexa Rabune halted all five for a shutout. Ella Roberts recorded two shots on the night and landed one on goal for WSU.
Both sides were issued one yellow card in the first conference game of the season.
Winona State falls to 1-3 (0-1 NSIC) with the loss while Mankato remains unbeaten at 4-0 (1-0 NSIC).
The Warriors wrap up their current homestand on Sunday against Concordia, St. Paul at 1 p.m.
