WINONA, Minn. – In a contest that that felt much closer than the final score would show, Concordia St. Paul erased a 1-0 first half deficit to score four unanswered goals in the second half of Sunday's matinee at Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium to hand Winona State a 4-2 loss.
The win propels the Golden Bears to 4-0-1 (1-0-1 NSIC) while the Warriors conclude their first homestand with a record of 1-4-0 (0-2 NSIC).
Winona State wasted little time breaking the scoring seal on Sunday afternoon, as a miscommunication between the CSP goalie and her defender lead to an open net goal by senior Courtney Wiencek in just the second minute of play. Sophomore keeper Yanel Ortiz record five saves for WSU in the first half of action to secure a 1-0 advantage for the home team at the break.
The second half would be a different story, though, as CSP found the back of the net with four unanswered goals to essentially put the game away. Hannah Pederson scored twice in a six-minute span early in the second half to jumpstart the CSP offense. The Golden Bears went on to add two more goals from Cayla Renwick and Nikki Anderson late in the second half to make a Warrior comeback almost impossible.
However, the Warriors did not go down quietly as Georgette Topalis struck for her team-leading third goal of the season in the 86th minute from the 18-yard box. But it was too little too late for the Warriors as the clock struck zeros with a final score of 4-2.
Anderson led CSP in shots on the day (5) while Jena Berkland was close behind (4). The Warriors were led in shots by freshman Jaida Wiege (3) and junior Missy Greco (2). All four Golden Bears goals were assisted while both Warrior goals were unassisted.
CSP goalkeeper Jordyn Clark tallied three saves on the day in the win. After setting a new single-game record with 16 saves on Friday night, Ortiz reached double digits once more on Sunday with 10 saves in the loss.
Winona State will hit the road next weekend as the Warriors travel to face Minnesota Crookston on Friday at 3 p.m. and Bemidji State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
