Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Freshman trio lifts Winona State to win at Crookston

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Three freshmen on the Winona State University women's soccer team propelled the Warriors to their first conference win of the season on Friday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Crookston by a final score of 3-1. Jaida Wiege, Bailey Deininger and Ashley Hewitt each netted their first collegiate goals in the win for WSU.

With the road win, the Warriors improve to 2-4 (1-2 NSIC) while the Golden Eagles remain winless at 0-4 (0-3 NSIC).

The first half was controlled by the Warriors as they outshot the Golden Eagles, 18-5. Wiege picked up her first goal of the year off an assist from senior Courtney Wiencek in the 18th minute of play. The lead would not last long, however, as UMC would get on the board for the first time all season on a goal by Maggie Peterson.

In the second half, the Warriors poured on 14 more shots, two of which landed in the back of the net. Deininger tallied her first career goal off an assist from Missy Greco in the 68th minute, and fellow rookie Hewitt scored an unassisted goal in the 89th minute right before time expired to give the Warriors some extra cushion.

Sophomore goalkeeper Yanel Ortiz didn't have as much action today as in the previous two matches, but she was still very efficient with four saves on five shots on goal.

Wiege and junior Camryn Cadiz led the way in shots (5) while Wiege, Huett, and freshman Ellie Wardell all led the Warriors in shots on goal (2). The Warriors outshot the Golden Eagles, 32-8, while also putting more shots on frame (12-5).

The Warriors conclude their road trip on Sunday as they travel to Bemidji State University for a 1 p.m kickoff. Winona State has already faced the defending regular season champs on their home pitch this season in a non-conference game that resulted in a close 2-1 Beaver decision.

Following that game the Warriors return to Winona for a weekend homestand against the Wolves of Northern State and the Dragons of Minnesota State University-Moorhead.
