Warriors blanked by defending conference champion Beavers

BEMIDJI, Minn. – In a tightly contested battle against the 2018 regular season conference champions, Winona State University suffered a 1-0 setback to Bemidji State University as the Beavers netted the lone goal of a 1-0 affair in the second half.

Despite a resilient defensive effort, Winona State falls to 2-5 (1-3 NSIC) after splitting its weekend road trip. Bemidji State improves to 4-2-1 (3-0-1 NSIC) with the shutout victory. The Warriors also played the Beavers tough in the opening match of the 2019 campaign as WSU fell in a non-conference tilt, 2-1.

Neither the Warriors nor Beavers could get anything going in the first half, as most of the game was contested near midfield. Sophomore keeper Yanel Ortiz helped keep the Beavers at bay with a pair of big saves in the first half of action.

In the second half, the Warriors out-shot the Beavers, 7-4, but it was the home team that found the back of the net off a corner kick in the 58th minute of play. WSU saw its best chance of the day in the 68th minute, but the Beavers' goalkeeper came up with a big save on senior Alyssa Reynolds.

The Beavers (13) held a slight edge over the Warriors (12) in total shots while Winona State (5) put more shots on frame than Bemidji State (3). Camryn Cadiz led the Warriors in shots (4) while Reynolds put two shots on goal in the loss.

The Warriors return home next weekend as they host Northern State University on Friday at 5 p.m. to open a two-game homestand. Winona State then welcomes MSU Moorhead on Sunday at 1 p.m. to Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
