Warrior Stories : Jennifer and Jonte Flowers

Winona, Minn. -  On nights when the family can gather around the dinner table in the Flowers household this winter, it is fair to assume that sports will likely be the topic of discussion. Which sports? That may be more difficult to predict.

In a two-for-one Warrior Stories edition, we catch up with Jennifer and Jonte Flowers, two former Winona State student-athletes who have independently made their mark on sport in Minnesota and beyond, crafting remarkable careers built on the foundation of their time at WSU.

Jennifer Flowers is a familiar face in Minnesota college sports circles, having served in multiple athletic leadership roles at Winona State, the University of Minnesota, and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).  In June 2019, Flowers was named the vice-president and women's commissioner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).

As a Warrior volleyball student-athlete - then Jennifer Jepson - came to Winona from Manson, Iowa and earned NSIC All-Academic honors in her sophomore, junior and senior years. In her final season, Jepson was fifth in the NSIC in service aces and seventh in the league in total assists, en route to earning 2002 NSIC All-Conference status as a setter for the Warriors.

Graduating with a degree in education in 2003, and with a nudge or two from Athletic Director Larry Holstad, Flowers embarked on a coaching and athletic administration career that is based on building strong relationships and with a focus of putting the best interests of student-athletes first. Over the course of her career in college athletics, Flowers has worked with almost every NCAA sport and was credited with several important student-centric initiatives including the creation of the NSIC Elite 18 award.  Additionally, in that time, Flowers earned her master’s degree in sport management from the University of Minnesota.  Read this NCAA release for more on Flowers' role with the WCHA; the NCAA Division I women’s hockey season schedule is still being finalized and will be announced later this fall.

Jonte Flowers was a key part of two national championship men's basketball teams at Winona State and a defensive catalyst for a program which won 57 straight contests at one point in his career.  Individually, Flowers is second all-time in steals in NCAA basketball history and is one of the few four-time conference players-of-the-year in NCAA college basketball, earning NSIC Defensive Player-of-the-Year each of his four seasons for WSU.

Upon graduation from Winona State, the Madison, Wisconsin native went on to a successful professional career in Europe, suiting up for ten teams over the course of 11 seasons.  Flowers was inducted to the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame through his role with the 2006 and 2008 WSU NCAA Championships teams and was voted in most recently as an individual as a member of the 2020 class.  Flowers, and other members voted in this past fall, will be formally introduced in the fall of 2021.  Read more about the WSU 2020 Hall of Fame inductees at this link.

On October 19, Flowers was introduced as the next varsity boys’ basketball coach at Burnsville High School after serving as an assistant coach with Concordia-St. Paul in the 2019-20 season.   Flowers is a licensed real estate professional, working with the At Home Real Estate Team of Re/Max Results office.

In addition to their impressive history as student-athletes, coaches and contributors to the Minnesota sports scene, Jennifer and Jonte join forces to help their kids - daughter, Ayanna, and son, Kellen - navigate the hybrid school model.  The family resides in Burnsville and look forward to the upcoming, albeit different, 2020-21 winter sports seasons around the corner.  A tip of the Warrior helmet to Jennifer and Jonte for taking time from their busy schedules to check in with us, as well as WNB Financial, as their support makes Warrior Stories possible.
