The Winona State University women's tennis team will play its last home matches at the Winona Tennis Center until the end of March this weekend. The Warriors host the Marauders of University of Mary at 12:30 on Saturday and the MSU Moorhead Dragons at 12:30 on Sunday.
Notes
STARTING OFF STRONG: The Warriors have started the season off strong, going 3-1 to begin conference play. The Warriors have been dominant in their wins so far this season, only giving up one point in all three victories combined. Winona State's lone loss came to perennial powerhouse Augustana, where they competed well, but eventually fell 6-1 to the Vikings. The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Warriors, however, as they host to two of the three remaining undefeated teams in the NSIC, University of Mary and MSU Moorhead. MSU Moorhead was picked to finish second in the NISC, one spot above the Warriors, while U-Mary was picked to finish one spot below the Warriors in fourth.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Warriors 2020 schedule is packed with nine home matches. Over the past three seasons, WSU has posted a 20-3 record inside the Winona Tennis Center.
STREAK BREAKER: Winona State sophomore
Beth Murman did something no one has done in eight years, defeat an Augustana #1. In her #1 singles match last Saturday, Murman defeated Augustana's Laura Arce Vieyra by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. The last time an Augustana #1 lost in a NSIC match was back in 2012 when Kathyrnn Jesperson fell to Winona State's own Erin Kappers. Murman currently sits at 4-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles on the year.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Winona State doubles teams have gone a combined 10-2 on the year, with the duo of senior
Kendra Kappes and freshman
Rachel Kelly having yet to lose a match at the #2 position. The senior/freshman tandem is currently outscoring their opponents 24-4 on the young season.
SENIOR SZN: The senior trio of
Tayla Card,
Kendra Kappes and
Kaisey Skibba are picking up right where they left off last season, going a combined 8-4 to start the year. Card tied for the team lead with 11 singles wins in 2019 (11-5 at Singles No. 4) and is on her way to matching that total with a 3-1 start to the season at Singles #5. Kappes, a three-time All-NSIC recipient, is off to a solid 3-1 start at #2 singles. Skibba, a first-team All-NSIC doubles recipient last year, has gone 2-2 at #3 singles and has teamed up with
Beth Murman to go 3-1 at #1 doubles.
