Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, ILL. - The No. 17 Winona State Warriors couldn't find the offense in their Invitational opener as they would fall 5-1 to a very good No. 3 Grand Valley State team. The Warriors redeemed themselves in the second game, however, as they would score three runs in the top of the seventh against the University of Findlay to come away with the 6-3 victory.
The Warriors bats just weren't connecting against GVSU as they would tally just two hits in the entire seven-inning affair.
The Lakers scored one run in the first, two in the third, and two in the seventh to slowly pull away from the Warriors. Winona State's
Madison Meduna scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth to try to spark a Warriors comeback, but it wasn't meant to be as Laker pitcher Hannah Beatus struck out the final Warrior batter to close the game.
Warrior pitcher
Jordyn Kleman (1-1) struck out six in the loss.
The backend of the double-header against the University of Findley saw the Warriors bats come alive a little more, as they would tally seven hits in the win.
Winona State came out of the gate swinging, as a single by
Katie Kolb and a double by Ali Nowak got the Warriors going early. An
Alexis Kelsey blast would score all three to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead in the first.
The Oilers managed to pull three back in the fifth to tie the game.
Staring at a potential extra-inning situation, Madison Maduna came up clutch for the Warriors, hitting a bases loaded double up the middle to score
Libby Neveau and
Ann Smolenski.
Alyssa Van Valey (1-0) would shut down the Oilers in the bottom of the seventh to get her first win of the year.
Liz Pautz went four innings and struck out seven batters in the win.
All-American Ali Nowak went 1-for-2 in the game while scoring a run and walking twice.
The Warriors are back in action tomorrow at the Lewis Invitational as they face Saginaw Valley State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
