Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 Even though their season could potentially be over, the Winona State softball team knew they still had one day to show everyone what they are made of. In the end, it was the seniors who stepped up and led the Warriors to two victories. Winona State defeated Kutztown 5-2 in the opening game and finished the day with an 8-0, five inning win over Pitt-Johnstown.
Unlike many games this year, Winona State got behind early against Kutztown, going down 2-0 after two innings.
The Warriors came alive in the fourth, scoring all five of their runs in the frame.
Rylee Stout opened the inning with a solo home run to centerfield to cut the Golden Bears' lead in half. After an
Alison Nowak single,
Libby Neveau brought her home with a home run of her own.
Brianna Luciano hit an RBI single to make it 4-2 and was followed immediately by an RBI from senior
Katie Kolb to add one more to the Warrior lead.
Senior
Jordyn Kleman (6-4), one of the premier pitchers in Winona State history, struck out six and allowed just two earned runs over six innings of work to get the win.
Liz Pautz picked up three strikeouts in the seventh inning to get her first save of the year.
Nowak went 3-for-4 in the game with a run scored while Kolb went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Against Pitt-Johnstown, the Warriors scored early and often to put the game away right from the beginning.
With two of her fellow seniors (Kolb & Nowak) on base in the first inning,
Alexis Kelsey hit a 3-run home run to centerfield to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. In the very next at bat,
Libby Neveau hit her second dinger of the day to make it 4-0.
After a single from
Carly Kordich to begin the second,
Rylee Stout hit an RBI triple to push to Warrior lead to five. The next two batters ended up hitting RBI's of their own, with
Alison Nowak hitting a double to score Stout and
Alexis Kelsey hitting a single to score Nowak. WSU led 7-0 after two.
Alexis Kelsey made the most of her last at-bat of the game, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-0 in favor of the Warriors.
Kelsey was a monster against the Mountain Cats, going 3-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored, and five RBI's. The five RBI's are the most in a game for her WSU career.
Senior pitcher
Alyssa Van Valey (3-1) saved her best for last, throwing one of the best performances of her career against the Mountain Cats. Van Valey threw 4.1 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four.
Liz Pautz came in to record the finals two outs of the game.
The senior class of
Alison Nowak,
Katie Kolb,
Alexis Kelsey,
Jordyn Kleman, and
Alyssa Van Valey have had an amazing run with Winona State softball and each one truly embodies what it means to be a Winona State student-athlete. Should this be their final game, the class of 2020 will have the highest career winning percentage (.823) of any class to ever come through the program.
