Leading just 3-2 late in the game, the Winona State Warriors baseball team broke out for six runs in the seventh inning to take down previously undefeated Tiffin University by a score of 9-3.
Senior pitcher
Aaron Mutter was phenomenal in the win, allowing just one earned run on four hits in eight innings pitched.
Chad Herbst opened the Warrior scoring with an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Winona State took the lead for good off a 2 RBI single from
Sam Kohnle in the fifth to go up 3-2.
In the seventh inning, Herbst started the WSU offensive onslaught with an RBI double to center field to score Derick Martin. After RBI's from
Nick Nalewanski,
Andrew Pliner, and Derick Martin, in addition to multiple errors from the Dragon defense, the Warriors would come out of the inning leading 9-3.
The ninth inning was important for Winona State, especially one Warrior in particular. Senior
Caleb Schoenholz came in to pitch for the first time since having labrum surgery last year. Schoenholz will be key to the Warriors' success this year, as he was a perennial starter for WSU before going down with an injury last year. Schoenholz allowed just one run off four hits in his lone inning of work against the Dragons.
Chad Herbst and
Sam Kohnle each went 2-for-5 with two RBI's in the win while Derick Martin was walked a career high four times.
The Warriors don't have much time to rest as they take on Seton Hill tomorrow at 8 a.m.
