Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Pete Watkins

Winona State soccer falls in defensive battle at Minot State

MINOT, N.D. - The Winona State University women's soccer team played league-leading Minot State evenly in almost every statistical category during their NSIC matchup on Friday afternoon.

Unfortunately for the Warriors (3-4, 2-3 NSIC), the Beavers (6-2 / 5-0 NSIC) were able to make the only goal of the game stand up as enough to win the contest 1-0 at Herb Parker Stadium in Minot.

MSU's Sofia Lewis connected on her fifth goal of the season in the 71st minute of play on an assist by Lainey Sandberg to separate the teams by the slimmest of margins.  The two teams had identical marks in corner kicks earned during the match (5), and fouls (7), while the Warriors had a slight advantage in shots, 9-8,  and shots on target, 7-5.  WSU forced Maddie Kindred into seven saves on the day, but the Beaver goalkeeper was equal to the task and earned the shutout.

For Winona State, Missy Greco led the attack with four shots, three on frame, while Riley Harmon had two shots, one on goal.  Ella Roberts, Abigail Williams and Reanne Weil all had shots on target as well.  Goalkeeper Alyson Jumper finished the game with four saves and one goal against, moving to 2-2 in starts this season.

Winona State will continue their road swing through North Dakota with a contest Sunday against the University of Mary (5-1-2 / 4-0-1 NSIC).  Kickoff between the Warriors and Marauders is set for 1pm on Sunday at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck.
