BISMARCK, N.D. - The Winona State University women's soccer team matched the University of Mary evenly for 90 minutes on Sunday, before falling to a golden goal scored three minutes into the first overtime period.
The setback stood as the second straight 1-0 loss suffered by WSU on their two-game road trip to North Dakota.
The match was delayed for three hours due to an air quality alert in Bismarck, but once underway, the Marauders (6-1-2 / 5-0-1) and the Warriors (3-5 / 2-4-0) found themselves locked in a midfield battle for most of the match. Winona State out shot UMary 3-1 in the first half, forcing one save by Marauder goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman. The second half saw UMary pick up their attacking tempo, registering four shots on goal. WSU starting goalkeeper
Alyson Jumper had two saves in the second half and only one corner kick was earned in the entire game, that being by the Warriors in the 80th minute of play.
The two teams went to overtime, with the University of Mary's Mary Park netting the game winner off an assist by Cassidy Pierce, ending a physical match that saw the two teams combine for 23 fouls on the day.
Winona State (3-5-0 / 2-4-0) will be in action next weekend on the road as they take on Concordia - St. Paul (4-4-1 / 3-2-1 NSIC) on Friday, Oct. 8 and Minnesota State - Mankato (6-2-1 / 4-1-1) on Sunday, Oct. 10. Kickoff times are set 7pm CST in St. Paul and 1pm CST at MSU-Mankato.
