WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team saw
Abigail Williams score in the first minute and in the last minute of their match on Sunday, Oct. 17, and her teammates connected four other times in between, en route to a 6-0 shutout win over the University of Minnesota Crookston in Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium.
Williams scored just 23 seconds into the first half on an assist from
Camryn Cadiz and
Missy Greco converted a penalty kick five minutes later to catapult the Warriors into the lead in the match and WSU never looked back.
UMC starting goalkeeper Kathryn Brainerd was busy in the first half, making seven saves in the opening 45 minutes. Greco was in high gear offensively, racking up four shots, three on goal, as she orchestrated an effective Warrior offense that generated 15 total shots in the first half, a season high. Greco picked up her second goal of the game, and of the season, when she finished off a well-worked series of passes in the penalty area to stake Winona State to a 3-0 lead. Greco's goal was assisted by Williams, who had a big day offensively for WSU.
Ella Roberts wrapped up the first half scoring for the Warriors, finding the back of the net in the 38th minute with an unassisted score, her second goal of the season. In the first half, WSU goalkeeper
Yanel Ortiz was forced into just one save, while her teammates racked up seven first half corner kicks.
After the break, UMC made a change in goal with Brainerd giving way to Emma Stempien, but the Warriors continued their offensive push. Generating 12 shots in the second half, WSU was held at bay by Stempien until the 86th minute when
Madyson Dye connected on a long-distance effort into the top corner of the goal to move the scoreboard to 5-0 Warriors. Then, in the waning moments of the game,
Abigail Williams also dialed up a shot from outside the penalty area and scored her second tally of the day to make the final margin 6-0 in favor of Winona State.
In racking up the season-high six goals, Winona State scored the most goals in one match since Sept. 29, 2012 when WSU beat Northern State 7-1 in Aberdeen. It was the largest shutout margin of victory since Oct. 11, 2008 when the Warriors beat Wayne State, 10-0
For Ortiz, the shutout was her second of the season and ninth of her Warrior career. She finished the contest with five saves overall against the Golden Eagles.
Now unbeaten in their last two contests, earning a point in a 1-1 2OT tie on Friday against #11 Bemidji State, the Warriors will prepare for a two-game road swing next weekend. Winona State will face Minnesota State - Moorhead on Friday, Oct. 22 at 3pm and then travel to take on Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. on Sunday, Oct. 24. Kickoff against the Wolves is set for 1pm.
