FARGO, ND – The Winona State University women' tennis team will travel to Fargo, ND, to face off with the Dragons of Minnesota State - Moorhead on Saturday, February 20, at 4 pm and the University of Mary on Sunday, February 21, at 9 am.
Winona State opened the season 1-1 and are coming off an opening weekend split picking up a 5-2 win over the University of Sioux Falls, but falling to league-leading Augustana, 7-0.
All matches this weekend are held at Courts Plus, in Fargo, N.D. Contests against Minnesota State - Moorhead on Saturday are scheduled to be live streamed on the NSIC Network, available at this link.
LAST TIME OUT AGAINST THE MARAUDERS
In 2020, Winona State defeated UMary 6-1 on Saturday, Feb. 22 at home in the friendly confines of the Winona Tennis Center. Returners Beth Murman, Rachel Kelly, and Rina Niehoff all picked up singles wins against the Marauders last season, and likely will be looked to lead the way this year as well. Both Murman and Kelly were pushed to an extra set in 2020 by their respective UMary opponent; the Warriors claimed doubles honors with wins at #2 and #3.
MOST RECENTLY AGAINST THE DRAGONS
Minnesota State - Moorhead was one of only two NSIC squads to beat Winona State in the 2020 campaign. The Dragons downed the Warriors in Winona by a 5-2 scoreline, taking the doubles point with a pair of wins at #1 and #3. Kendra Kappes and Rachel Kelly beat their MSU-Moorhead rivals in #2 doubles. Kelly also claimed a win in #4 singles last season, as did Tayla Card at #5. This weekend's match-up should prove pivotal in the NSIC race for 2021, as the two teams have traded wins over the past 12 meetings; the Warriors and Dragons are 6-6, dating back to April, 17, 2009.
