Warrior Gymnastics starts 2021 season at UW-Whitewater

WSU set to compete for first time under Aixa Evenson

Winona, Minn. - The Winona State University women's gymnastics team, under first-year interim head coach Aixa Evenson, will compete at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a dual event against the Warhawks.

Saturday marks the first competition for the Warriors since March 7, 2020 when WSU took part in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Regional Championships at Eau Claire, Wis. The National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) National Championships, scheduled for March, were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the upcoming season, interim head coach Aixa Evenson said, "We've been soaking in every moment of training we have had together and with this year being unique, we cannot wait to feel the adrenaline of a competition.  These women have embraced every transition with grace and grasped major growth as a squad these past few weeks.  I am proud to have been their coach in such a tumultuous preseason because they have kept tremendous passion in the face of adversity.  Knowing what we have in store for this competitive season is quite thrilling for our gymnastics program.  We're excited to be Warriors this weekend!"

The competition Saturday is the first action for either program and is a part of the UW-Whitewater Parents/Alumni/Breast Cancer Awareness Day.  The Warhawks host Winona State in the Kris Russell Volleyball Area in the Williams Center on campus in Whitewater.  More information on the dual meet is available on the UW-Whitewater gymnastics page at the following link: https://uwwsports.com/sports/gymnastics

Winona State finished sixth in the 2020 WIAC/NCGA Regional Championships, with Shelsea Zehr with a 10-place finish on the vault, earning a personal-best 9.450.  The Warriors are scheduled to compete four times in 2021, traveling to UW-Whitewater this weekend and UW-Oshkosh on Thursday, March 18.  WSU will host UW-La Crosse in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court, on Friday, March 12 and will welcome Gustavus Adolphus College on Thursday, April 1.
