Winona State Tennis returns home for two matches this weekend

Warriors host Golden Eagles, Beavers at Winona Tennis Center

Winona, Minn. - The Winona State University women's tennis team, currently 2-2 on the year, returns home this weekend to host a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foes at the Winona Tennis Center.  Minnesota Crookston will take on WSU on Saturday at 4pm, while Bemidji State faces the Warriors at noon on Sunday.

The Warriors are coming off their first road trip of the 2021 season, where they battled with the unbeaten Minnesota State - Moorhead Dragons, falling 4-3 in a tough loss on Saturday, Feb. 20 but rebounded to beat the University of Mary, 6-1 on Sunday, Feb. 21.

First-year head coach Tom Sanvik has had his doubles squads claim three of the four doubles points available in the first four matchups of the season. In singles play, two Warriors sit at 3-1 so far, with Rina Niehoff and Rachel Kelly enjoying strong starts to the season.  Against Bemidji State, Sanvik's squad will face off against a familiar face; former Winona Senior High School standout Laney Rutkowski played for Sanvik in high school and now takes the court for the Beavers.

This weekend, the Bemidji State will bring a 2-3 record to Winona State, while the Golden Eagles are 0-5 so far in 2021.  Both programs will also play Upper Iowa while in Winona.
