Warrior Gymnastics celebrates three seniors in first home meet

Winona, Minn. - Competing in their first home meet of the 2021 season, and second meet overall, the Winona State University gymnastics team saw some strong performances across the lineup in a WIAC dual meet against the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. 

In terms of team scores, the Eagles registered a 189.200, while the Warriors earned a 179.225. 

For Winona State, top performers on the uneven bars were seniors Shelsea Zehr with a 9.225 and Anna Hiller who scored 8.950.  In addition, Izzy Kropiwiec and Emma Lamping both registered a 8.750 score on the bars, while Kaitlyn West came in at 8.050. UW-La Crosse's Kerrie Legualt won the event with a 9.725. 

In the vault, WSU was again led by Shelsea Zehr, who had the top Warrior score at 9.275 and Kaitlyn West notched a 9.25 in the second-best performance on the apparatus. The Warriors' Hailey Bryant had a 9.100, followed by Katie Curtis (8.850), Maya Fernando (8.650) and Izzy Kropiwiec (8.600). The Eagles' Madi Vanderpool took top honors at 9.575. 

On the beam, the Warriors were led by Lydia Anderson with a 9.400, while Kaitlyn West scored 9.275, the top two WSU finishes. Additionally, Quinnlan Burger scored a 8.900, senior Cora Geiger a 8.550, followed by Kropiwiec and Hiller at 8.000.  UW-La Crosse saw Olivia Opheim win the event with a 9.650.

The floor exercise, Zehr earned a 9.450, just ahead of Taryn Sellner who had a 9.400. Hailey Bryant had a 8.950, with Callie Van Dyck (8.950), Izzy Kropiwiec (8.550) and Katie Curtis (8.500), rounding out the Warrior finishes. Jenna Danninger of UW-L won the floor competition with a 9.525.

Izzy Kropiwiec competed in all four events for Winona State and earned an all-around score of 33.900; UW-La Crosse's Kacey Mortenson earned a 37.675. 

For Winona State, the meet offered the opportunity to honor the three seniors on the 2021 team.  As noted by head coach Aixa Evenson, " Anna HillerShelsea Zehr and Cora Geiger, have been nothing short of outstanding in their leadership this year."

Winona State will next be in action on Thursday, March 18 when they travel to the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh for a dual meet beginning at 5pm.
