Winona, Minn. - The Winona State University women's tennis team extended their winning streak to four matches, taming the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs, 5-2 at the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday evening.
WSU won the doubles point with a sweep to start the night.
Beth Murman and
Audrey Delich won 6-3 over Maegan Flight and Courtenay Leonard at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match,
Rachel Kelly and
Rina Niehoff dealt SMSU's Cora Delich and Gwendolen Sior a 6-0 setback. Wrapping up doubles play was theWSU pairing of
Sara Anderson and
Faith Young, who beat Louisa Harck and Silvia Poulakidas, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles.
Claiming the opening win for Winona State in singles action was
Rachel Kelly, who defeated Courtenay Leonard, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Rina Niehoff defeated Cora Delich for another Warrior win at No. 3 singles by a 6-4, 6-4 scoreline, and
Audrey Delich defeated Gwen Sior 6-4, 6-3 for a No. 4 singles point.
Sara Anderson saw success at No. 6 singles, beating the Mustangs' Daniela Poulakidas, 6-0, 6-1.
Southwest Minnesota State earned wins over WSU at the No. 1 singles, with Maegan Flight beating
Beth Murman, 3-6, 3-6, and No. 5 singles, where SMSU's Louisa Harck beat
Brooke Jorgensen, 6-3, 6-4.
With the 5-2 Warrior win, Winona State has now won four straight matches and moved their overall record to 8-3. Head coach
Tom Sanvik and WSU is 7-2 in NSIC action. After long home stretch, the Warriors will compete on the road on April 10-11, when they travel to St. Cloud for matches against the University of Minnesota - Duluth and St. Cloud State.
