Winona, Minn. - The Winona State University women's gymnastics team concluded the 2021 season in strong form on Thursday, April 1, falling to Gustavus Adolphus College by the narrowest of margins, 180.000 - 179.875.
For the Warriors, the meet caps a Covid-shortened season in which all Wisconsin Collegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) programs competed four times, with two home meets and two away events. All meets were Capital Cup dual competitions, consisting of vault, bars, beam and floor exercise.
Interim head coach
Aixa Evenson said, " It's been one heck of a year with Covid and all the craziness. We are really excited to come back, after a little break, and do bigger and better things."
On the bars for Winona State,
Anna Hiller claimed the top Warrior score in a 9.250, while
Kaitlyn West scored a 8.650, just ahead of
Hailey Bryant at 8.600.
Hannah Matuszak,
Breanna Ho and
Shelsea Zehr rounded out the top Warrior six at 8.500, 8.475 and 8.400, respectively. Hiller's 9.250 was the top mark for either team in the event.
In the vault,
Izzy Kropiwiec delivered a 9.275, the best Winona State score in the event.
Kaitlyn West scored a 9.200 and
Breanna Ho had a 9.125, as did
Shelsea Zehr.
Hailey Bryant finished with a 9.00 and
Jessie Gallier had a 8.950. Gustavus Adolphus' Annie Corbert won the event with a 9.375.
The beam saw
Anna Hiller finish just ahead of Warrior teammate,
Taryn Sellner with a 9.075 for Hiller and 9.000 for Sellner.
Kaitlyn West had a 8.900,
Lydia Anderson a 8.775 and
Cora Geiger garnered a 7.700 for WSU.
In the floor routine,
Shelsea Zehr tied for the top overall score with GAC's Annie Corbett, as they both notched a 9.450. Tayrn Sellner scored a 9.375, while
Callie Van Dyck earned a season-best 9.325, as did
Izzy Kropiwiec.
Katie Curtis and
Hailey Bryant rounded out the Warrior competitors in the floor with an 8.875 (Curtis) and 8.750 (Bryant).
Evenson also noted,"Most of all, we were proud to have been able to honor our seniors and compete in the sport that we love. And, especially today with our Gustavus Adolphus meet, be able to do what we love in front of the people that we love is most important."
Winona State will look forward to the 2021-22 WIAC campaign next season, as well as a return to National Collegiate Gymnastics Assocation (NCGA) Regional and National competitions.
