Winona State men's golf heads to NSIC Championships

WSU recently completed final tune-up at NSU Invitational

Winona, Minn. -  The Winona State University men's golf team, coming off of a 14th place finish at the 22nd annual Northeastern State University Golf Classic held in Muskogee, Okla.,  turns their attention to the 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Men's Golf Championships, beginning tomorrow, Friday April 16.

At the NSU Invite, Abraham Elmore paced the Warriors, turning in a three-round score of 217, one of his top performances of the season.  Matt Turner was second for head coach Jeff Straight and WSU with a 221, followed closely by Matthew Chandler who shot a 226. Bennett Thomas and Markus Iwerbo rounding out the Winona State lineup, scoring a 229 and 234, respectively.  As a team, Winona State carded a 893.

Winona State finished one spot ahead of NSIC foe Minnesota State - Mankato, as the Mavericks shot 896 as a team, while Bemidji State was tied for eighth place, earning a team score of 873.   Central Missouri won the event, shooting an impressive 847 over three rounds; Luke Palmowski of Rogers State took top individual honors with a 207 in the tournament.

The NSIC men's golf championships will be held at Shoal Creek Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo. The three round, 54-hole event is scored using stroke play to crown the NSIC Champion as well as determine the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Regional Tournament.

In 2019, Winona State captured the NSIC Championship,  finishing 26 strokes ahead of second place Concordia-St. Paul.  With the win, the Warriors earned their 14th NSIC title and first since 2007.   Last spring, the 2020 Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
