INDIANAPOLIS - The #14 Winona State University volleyball team moved to 8-0 on the season on the strength of an unbeaten run through the UIndy Tournament field this past weekend, dispatching Missouri S & T and host University of Indianapolis this evening to ice the perfect start.
Winona State's 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-18) win over Missouri S & T was highlighted by
Megan Flom, as the senior patrolled the net in non-stop fashion, picking up nine blocks in the match, a season-high so far. Flom also led WSU in kills (11), while
Madison Larson and
Sidney Paulson had seven apiece.
Becca Pagel had 11 digs and
Bre Maloney racked up 32 assists as the Warriors routed the Miners. Winona State racked up 13 blocks as a team, compared to just four by Missouri S & T, to win the defensive side of the net on the day.
In the Warrior's fourth and final victory of the UIndy Invitational, WSU wore out the home team, 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18). Although WSU dropped its first set of the tournament to begin the match, they quickly rebounded and took control the rest of the way.
Bre Maloney had an amazing match, producing 47 assists and collecting 11 digs, along with four kills.
Megan Flom had 23 kills in the four sets, hitting an impressive .476.
Madison Larson finished with nine kills and
Madison Rizner had eight as well.
Becca Pagel produced 24 digs to lead the team in that category, and
Casey Volkmann contributed ten.
For Winona State, the 8-0 early-season winning streak is one of the best starts to a Warrior season in the
Joe Getzin era; WSU went 8-0 to open 2019 and 9-0 to start 2016. The current WSU high-water mark for consecutive wins to start a season is 12, set in 1987.
Winona State will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 17 when they host Northern State at 6pm, and the following day, as MSU-Moorhead comes to town for a 4pm start. The two matches mark the start of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play for Winona State and will be the first home volleyball action in nearly two years in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.
