Winona State shuts out Minnesota Duluth in women's soccer

Story Links

WINONA, Minn. - The Winona State University women's soccer team earned a shutout win over Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, blanking the Bulldogs 3-0.

Goalkeeper Alyson Jumper earned the first shutout of her Winona State career and her second win of the season by making 11 saves in goal, while Ellie Wardell had three first-half assists to pace a fast-starting Warrior side.

WSU scored early with Jamie Kwon connecting on a Wardell delivery in the fourth minute to notch her first goal of the 2021 campaign and put the Warriors on the front foot in the match.  The tally marked the second time in as many games that Winona State scored in the opening five minutes of the match, and on Sunday, Emily Chudik doubled the lead just eight minutes later on her second goal of the season, with Wardell also getting the assist.

Another Warrior, Ella Roberts, also opened her WSU goal-scoring account in the first half with Wardell sending her through to put Winona State up 3-0 in the games first half hour.

While the Warriors were finding the back of the net on their chances, the Bulldogs created several scoring opportunities of their own in the first half and throughout the contest. In fact, UMD tested Jumper eight times in the opening 45 minutes, forcing her into several quality stops including back-to-back shots from Jacqueline Jares and Nora Griffen-Wiesner on a pair of corner kicks in 24th minute.  The two saves came at a key point in the match with WSU up 2-0, but the Bulldogs carrying the run of play.

After the flurry of UMD chances and Jumper's response, Roberts rose to the occasion to provide the third goal and some breathing room.

Wardell's three assists were the most in a game by a Warrior since 2013, when Alania Kne had four against Augustana on Oct. 27. Stacey Jacobs had five helpers against Minnesota Crookston on Oct. 21, 2001 to set the Winona State program record.

The victory extended the Winona State winning streak over UMD to four straight wins, dating back to the 2017 season.

For the game, Minnesota Duluth had more shots than WSU, 17-15 and more more efforts on target, 11-10.  The Warriors won the corner kick count, 4-3, while the Bulldogs committed more fouls than Winona State, 7-4.

Winona State (3-3-0 overall, 2-2-0 NSIC) dealt the Bulldogs their seventh loss of the season.

After an extended home stand of six matches, the Warriors will hit the road for the first time to take on Minot State on Friday, Oct. 1. Winona State will kickoff at 3pm CST against the Beavers.
