Winona State opens up 2021 with pair of wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Winona State volleyball head coach Joe Getzin likes to prepare his team for the rigors of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) schedule in the early part of the fall, and the WSU trip to the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational was a key part of the preparation.

The Warriors passed the first day test with flying colors, going 2-0 against top competition, downing #9 Oklahoma Baptist 3-0 (27-25, 25-20, 25-23) to start the day, and dropping McKendree University 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-13)  in the nightcap.

Against #9 OBU, Megan Flom racked up 12 kills, followed closely by teammates Madison Rizner (11) and Madison Larson (9). Bre Maloney distributed 42 assists and recorded 10 digs for the Warriors against the Bison.

In the second match against McKendree, WSU saw Cori Meyers and Madison Larson lead the team in kills with 11 each. Meyers also racked up 14 digs and Becca Pagel had 16 to top the team in that category.

The pair of wins marks the second straight season Winona State has started 2-0; in 2019, the Warriors won the University of Illinois - Springfield Classic, going 4-0 to begin the year.  On Saturday in Big Rapids, WSU will face two nationally ranked squads in (#13) Hillsdale College and host (RV) Ferris State University.  The Winona State - Ferris State match will be live streamed.
