Winona State volleyball earns key NSIC road victory over Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. – The Winona State University volleyball team earned a four-set road victory over Minnesota State University, Mankato this evening by scores of 25-15, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18.

The Warriors used efficient offense in the first set to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. WSU hit .355 in the opening frame and connected for 14 kills with just three attack errors.

The Mavericks were able to stifle the WSU attack in the second set as Minnesota State evened the match at a set apiece.

In the third set, Winona State produced their best offensive frame of the evening, committing just two errors and hitting .417. The Warriors then closed out the match with a 25-18 fourth set victory, highlighted by strong defense.

Winona State used a spread attack as four Warriors recorded at least eight kills. Sidney Paulson led the way with 13 kills, while Lydia Lange was right behind with 12. Madison Larson and Taylor Pagel recorded 10 and eight kills, respectively.

Jaci Winchell was the main facilitator of the WSU offense, dishing out 39 assists and picking up 11 digs to record a double double. Paulson also recorded a double double with her team high 13 kills and 14 digs. Casey Volkmann added 13 digs as a key part of the WSU defense which held MSU to a .090 hitting percentage.

The Warriors (12-9, 8-6 NSIC) will host No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 5pm as part of Winona State Homecoming.
