Winona State cross country teams set to compete for NSIC titles

WAYNE, Neb. - The 2022 NSIC Cross Country Championships will take place in Wayne, Nebraska on Saturday, November 5 at Wayne Country Club, hosted by Wayne State College. The Winona State University men's and women's teams will compete among the elite runners in the league for a conference title.

The men's 8,000-meter race is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by the women's 6,000-meter race at noon.  The women's race will feature 16 teams and 14 teams will compete in the men's race. Fans can follow the action via social media (#NSICCC) and on the NSIC Network. There is no admission charge to attend the event.

On the women's side, Winona State All-American Lindsay Cunningham will look to defend her individual championship that was earned last fall, a race in which the standout from the Wisconsin Dells outpaced the field, finishing with a time of 21:21.42.  Also in 2021, McKenna Taylor was a top ten finisher at 22:18.43 and has been a consistent force on the 2022 WSU squad this fall. As a team in 2021, Winona State finished fifth overall at the NSIC Championships.

Heading into the competition on Saturday, the Winona State women's team is ranked fourth in the Central Region and No. 17 nationally in the latest USTFCCA coaches' poll.

Mitchell Buerkle is the top returning competitor for Winona State on the men's side; last fall Buerkle ran a time of 26:34.97, good for 27th overall. Also likely to feature in WSU success this year is freshman Mitchell Johnstone, a freshman from Cleveland, Minn. who has led the team in top times this season. In 2021, the Winona State men were sixth overall.

The NCAA Cross Country Regional will take place in Joplin, Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 19th.  The NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, December 3 at Chamber's Bay in University Place, Washington.
