NSIC Weekend : Volleyball

WINONA, Minn. -  The Winona State University volleyball team wraps up the 2022 season with a home NSIC Weekend, hosting (RV) University of Sioux Falls on Friday, Nov. 4 and then competing against No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, Nov. 5.  The Winona State senior class will be honored following Saturday's match against the Mustangs. 

The Warriors and Cougars will start at 6 p.m. on Friday while Saturday's contest against SMSU will begin at 2 p.m.  Both contests will take place in McCown Gymnasium, home of WNB Financial Court.

Winona State currently has an 12-13 overall record and 8-10 NSIC slate and have the opportunity to upset a pair of nationally ranked opponents on the weekend. Friday's match will be aired by HBC 25 Sports, while Saturday's match will be on the Winona State NSIC Network.

WINONA STATE STORYLINES
  • WSU is 12-13 overall, 8-10 in league play. 
  • Winona State was swept on the road in their last meetings with USF and SMSU.
  • The Warriors are 6-7 in their last 13 meetings with Sioux Falls. 
  • WSU is 4-13 versus Southwest Minnesota State in matchups since 2010.
  • Madison Larson earned NSIC Second Team honors this week and is tied with teammate Sidney Paulson for the team lead in kills/set at 3.33.
  • Casey Volkmann leads the Warriors in digs/set at 4.23 and Mikenna Joerger averages 1.15 blocks/set.
  • Winona State has a 5-3 record at home this year. 
  • Head coach Joe Getzin has earned a record of 355-332 over 24 seasons. 

Sioux Falls STORYLINES
  • USF is receiving votes in the current AVCA poll and has a 16-9 record entering the weekend. 
  • The Cougars are 12-6 in NSIC play in 2022.
  • Sioux Falls upset No. 2 Concordia St. Paul last weekend, 3-2 at home. 
  • The Cougars have won their last four matches, beating two nationally ranked teams (#5 SMSU & #2 CSP) in the process. 
  • Offensively, USF is led by Courtney Holsteen at 2.99 kills/set and Sadie Voss with 2.79 kills/set.
  • Jordyn Hamm has accumulated 94 total blocks on the year for USF.
  • Sioux Falls is 5-3 in road matches and 4-3 in neutral site contests this year. 
  • Dan Mathews enters his second season as head coach at Sioux Falls. 

Southwest Minnesota State STORYLINES
  • The Mustangs are 21-5 overall, 13-5 in NSIC play. 
  • Southwest Minnesota State is No. 7 in the current AVCA poll.
  • SMSU will play at Upper Iowa on Friday before traveling to Winona State on Saturday. 
  • The Mustangs are 2-2 in their last four matches.
  • Offensively, SMSU is led by Meg Schmidt at 3.01 kills/set. 
  • On defense, Emma VanHeel has 93 blocks on the year while Natalee Rolbiecki has racked up 440 digs
  • Tyler Boddy is in his first season as the head coach of the Mustangs.
