SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State University women's basketball team took on Augustana University on Sunday, Dec. 18 in their final game before beginning the holiday break.
Despite having three Warriors reach double-digits in points, Winona State fell to the Vikings, 73-57.
WSU was down by 11 at the break, 37-26, with
Caitlin Riley contributing a pair of 3-pointers - one in each of the first two quarters of play – to pace the Warriors in the opening 20 minutes.
After halftime, Winona State opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run, but the Vikings were able to answer with another scoring streak of their own, notching two triples and a set of successful free throws to outscore WSU 18-15 in the third quarter.
WSU was unable to dent Augustana's momentum in the fourth frame, falling by 16 points to the hosts.
Alex Dornfeld scored 15 points,
Caitlin Riley finished with 13 points and
Lauren Fech added 10 to lead Winona State. Riley was the top WSU rebounder with six boards and
Paige Peaslee came off the bench to haul in five rebounds.
Overall, Winona State was 21-of-51 (41.2%) from the floor and 7-of-27 (25.9%) on 3-point attempts in the game. WSU hit 8-of-12 (87.5%) free throws and won the rebounding battle 33-30.
Augustana improves to 10-2 overall on the year and owns 5-2 NSIC mark. Lauren Sees led the Vikings with 17 points in the contest
With the setback, Winona State falls to 8-5 overall and 2-5 in the NSIC. The Warriors are next in action on December 31, traveling to Upper Iowa for a 2 p.m. contest.
