Winona State falls at Drury in series opener

OZARK, Mo. - The Winona State University baseball team ran into a buzzsaw on Friday at U.S. Baseball Stadium in the first of three games scheduled against Drury University over the weekend of Feb. 18-20.  The Panther pitching staff held the Warrior bats to just five hits, handing WSU a 17-2 setback.

While the Winona State lineup mustered just five hits against Drury, three came from Miller Wallace who made the most of his at-bats.  Wallace - a freshman from Oconomowoc, Wis. - singled in the second and eighth innings, and hit a solo home run in the sixth, to account for much of the Warrior offense. Cooper Kapanke connected on a single in the eighth and Nick Herbst added a base hit and two walks to the Winona State effort.

Other than Wallace, the Drury pitching combination of Colby Childs and Logan Pittman seemed to have WSU's number, striking out nine Warriors on the day. Childs threw the first six innings for the win while Pittman came on on the seventh to wrap up the game for the home side

A trio of four-run innings put the contest out of reach for the Warriors, with the Panthers plating four runs in the second, sixth and eighth frames. Winona State used five pitchers in the game, with Dillon Whittaker getting the start and going four full innings. Nicolas Herold and John Breske both made appearances in the middle innings of the contest, with Herold facing five batters and Breske eight.  Nathan Platter and Chandler Schmidt wrapped up the day for the Warrior staff, throwing the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.

Drury scored 17 runs on 19 hits while committing one error. Winona State scored twice, collected five hits and had two errors.

WSU (0-4, 0-0 NSIC) and Drury (5-0, 0-0 GLVC) will meet up again tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon at U.S. Baseball Park.
